Gene Horton was born in La Junta, Colorado on March 29, 1934,
and moved with his family to Killeen, Texas in 1945.  He
graduated from Killeen High School in 1952 where he served as
Senior Class President, played four years of football for the Killeen
Kangaroos, and was the leading ground gainer as fullback the first
half of the football season his senior year.  Gene was also voted
Class Favorite and Most Handsome Runner Up.  It was at Killeen
High School where he fell in love with Phynetta Gautier, the
head cheerleader and Homecoming Queen, and he married her
in August of 1953.  They have been married for 56 years.

Gene was saved by the grace of Jesus in 1953 while attending Baylor University.  He transferred to Texas A&M Corpus Christi his senior year and graduated in 1958.  He worked on his Masters at Texas A&M in Kingsville, and completed his Masters and earned his Doctorate in Theology at Trinity Seminary
Bro. Gene was ranked 2nd scholastically in a class of 1200 seniors.  He has pastored six Southern Baptist churches.

He taught high school at Pettus, Texas, was the chaplain at the Marine Military Academy for three years, and has been an aircraft pilot for 47 years with FAA certified commercial and instructor ratings.  His hobbies include snow-skiing, motorcycles, and mountain biking.  He also loves cats. 

Bro. Gene has been in the ministry for 56 years.  He has been the pastor at Rio Hondo Baptist Church since 1968 . The church has a weekly Sunday television program that has been broadcast for over 40 years.

He has continuously preached Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the only way to heaven (John 3:16) throughout his ministry.

children--David (Stephanie), Donna
(Vance) and Debbie (Jack), 5
grandchildren--Steven (Daisy),
Kristi, Jaclyn (Danny), Travis (Jill)
and Gina, and 5 great grandsons
Daniel, Nathan, Joshua, Jaxon
and Grant.
